Abstract
In a diffraction grating element, between a first mediumand a fourth medium, a second mediumand a third mediumare disposed alternately to form a diffraction grating. The light, which enters the diffraction grating from the first medium, is diffracted at the diffraction grating portion and output to a fourth medium. Or, the light, which enters the diffraction grating from the fourth medium, is diffracted at the diffraction grating portion and output to the first medium. The index of refraction n–nof each medium satisfies a relational expression of 'n<n<n, n≦n≦n' or 'n≦n≦n, n<n<n'.
