Abstract
A power unit for a vehicle, such as an automobile, includes an internal combustion engineas a prime mover for the vehicle, a generatorand a Stirling enginefor driving the generatorThe Stirling engineuses the exhaust gas discharged by the internal combustion engineas a high-temperature heat source. Power generated by the generatoris supplied to an electric motorfor driving auxiliary machinesandand to a batteryfor supplying power to the electric motorThe engine speed of the Stirling engineis controlled through the control of the load on the generatorby a field regulatorAn optimum engine speed of the Stirling engineis determined such that the brake horsepower of the Stirling engineincreases to a maximum or substantially maximum brake horsepower. The fuel consumption of the internal combustion engineas the prime mover that produces waste heat as a high-temperature heat source for the Stirling engineis reduced, and the auxiliary machines are driven so as to fully exercise their functions even in a state where the brake horsepower of the Stirling engineis low.
