Abstract
A peristaltic pumpfor use in ophthalmic surgery includes a housing, a pump headhaving plurality of rollers, a backing plateattached to the housing, and a length of surgical tubing. The rollersand backing platecooperate to pinch the length of surgical tubingto peristaltically pump fluids from a surgical site to a collection bag. At least one of the pump headand the backing plateis moveable, during operation of the pump, from a tubing pinched position to a tubing vent position. This movement allows the tubingto be vented by removing the pinched closure of the tubing
