A messaging system having a network interface unit (NIU) with an embedded services processor (ESP) that provides a general purpose computing capability within the NIU that supports the streaming of data for the messaging system with external computer networks, and that may also have the ability to connect to networks external to the messaging system via that general purpose computing capability is disclosed.
