Abstract

A self-healing polymer compositioncontains a polymer mediaand a plurality of microcapsules of flowable polymerizable materialdispersed in the polymer media, where the microcapsules of flowable polymerizable materialcontain a flowable polymerizable materialand have an outer surfaceupon which at least one polymerization agentis chemically attached. The microcapsulesare effective for rupturing with a failure of the polymeric media, and the flowable polymerizable materialreacts with the polymerization agentwhen the polymerizable materialmakes contact with the polymerization agentupon rupture of the microcapsules. There is also provided a method of using the self-healing polymeric compositionto repair fractures in polymers, as well as articles of manufacture including the self-healing system, and the microencapsulated polymerizable particlesthemselves.
