Abstract

An inflator () for an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device () has a housing (). A propellant charge () in the housing () is actuatable to provide inflation fluid for inflating the device (). The housing () has an end wall () and a side wall (). The side wall () has a fluid passage () for directing flow of inflation fluid to the device (). A flow control member () extends over the end wall () and the side wall () and has a movable portion () at least partially blocking the fluid passage (). The control member () has an outlet opening () located over the end wall (). The movable portion () moves as the pressure of inflation fluid acting on it increases upon inflator actuation to control the pressure in the housing () and to direct inflation fluid toward the outlet opening ().
