Abstract

The invention provides a surfactant for emulsion polymerization represented by the formula (I), (II) or (VI). The invention also provides a method of producing a polymer emulsion using this surfactant. wherein A represents an alkylene group having 3 to 18 carbon atoms or an alkoxymethylethylene group (alkoxy group has 4 to 18 carbon atoms), EO represents an oxyethylene group, a denotes a number of 0 to 50, b denotes a number of 0 to 200 wherein a and b are not 0 at the same time and M represents a cation; wherein A'O represents an oxyalkylene group having 3 to 18 carbon atoms, E′O represents an oxyethylene group, m denotes a number of 0 to 50 and n denotes a number of 5 to 200, provided that the -(A′O)— groups m in number [-(A′O)m-] may be the same as or different from one another.
