An optical system has a first lens element (L) having an outer portion () and a first tapered surface (). A second lens element (L) has an outer portion () and a second tapered surface (). The first lens element (L) and the second lens element (L) are spaced apart relative to each other and centered relative to the optical axis (O) by a portion of the first tapered surface () being in contact with a portion of the second tapered surface (), the outer portion () of the first lens element (L) being spaced apart from the outer portion () of the second lens element (L).
