Abstract

An electronically controlled retractable landing light () for use with aircraft. A controller () compares the commanded position of a lighthead () by means of a contactless absolute position sensor (). Operation of a brake (), motor (), and lamp () is controlled by a control unit (). Electrical power to the brake (), motor (), and lamp () is slowly applied and removed to reduce electromagnetic emissions and extend the service life of a power stage (), brake (), motor (), and lamp (). The lighthead () may be manually stowed in the event of a fault.
