Abstract
A thrust bearingfor use with a shafthaving a collarmounted the shaftand rotatable therewith has a base ring, a series of shoespositioned on the base ring, and a compressible resilient spacing memberpositioned between the base ringand a housingfor the thrust bearing. The spacing membersupports the thrust bearingwhen the shaftis rotating during no-load operating conditions, as well as dampens the forces placed on the thrust bearingby the shaftwhen the shaftis rotating during no-load conditions. The spacing memberis sufficiently stiff that it supports the thrust bearingwhen the shaftis rotating under no-load conditions, but is sufficiently compressible to be compressed to the extent that the gapbetween the base ringand the housingis eliminated due to the forces placed on the thrust bearingby the shaftbringing the base ringinto contact with the housingduring normal load operating conditions.
