Abstract

A caller ID system and method includes the ability to transmit a party's name in native language characters along with a transliteration of the party's name into global characters, such as Latin characters. The native characters could include Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters. The caller ID information can be used to indicate a calling party's name to a called party, and/or to indicate a called party's name to a calling party. The user of the caller ID device can select native languages to be displayed. Whenever caller ID information includes a native language name matching the user's selected languages, the native language name will be displayed on the caller ID device. Otherwise, the transliteration of the native language name will be displayed.
