Abstract
A high-speed milling cutter () includes a shank (), a front portion (), and a transition surface () between the shank () and the front portion (). The cutter () also includes an insert pocket () having a bottom surface () and side surfaces (). The bottom surface () includes a raised boss () for supporting a cutting insert (). The cutting insert () has a top surface (), a bottom surface () and side surfaces (). The cutting insert () includes a primary cutting edge () formed at an intersection between the top surface () and two of the side surfaces (). The top surface () of the cutting insert () includes a concave or dish-shaped topography that is designed for high-speed milling operations of a metallic work piece. The cutting insert () also includes a bore () in the bottom surface () capable of receiving the raised boss () for securely retaining the cutting insert () within the insert pocket (), and reducing bending moment on retaining screwduring high-speed milling operations.
