Abstract
A foreign matter detection mechanism for detecting a foreign matter other than a carriage object for the purpose of, e.g., preventing illegal use of a card by detecting a foreign matter other than the card inserted into, e.g., a card reader, a carriage movement mechanism used in the foreign matter detection mechanism and the like, and a method for operating the carriage movement mechanism. The foreign matter detection mechanism () comprises foreign matter detection members () having foreign matter engagement portions () and move closer to or away from a traveling path (), a movement mechanism () for moving the foreign matter detection members () in a direction crossing the traveling path () respectively, and detecting means () for detecting presence/absence of foreign matter detection by the foreign matter detection members (). The foreign matter detection members () are attached to the movement mechanism () in such a manner that they thoroughly cut across an area through which a foreign matter () can pass when an object () does not exist in the traveling path () and they move while sliding on a lower surface of the object () when the object () exists in the traveling path ().
