Abstract
A communications system has stations arranged in clusters (and) of communication member stations (CM, CM, CMand CM), with one member station (CH, CHor CH) in each cluster being a head station for the cluster. Each member station (CM, CM, CMand CM) communicates with the network through a cluster head station (CH, CHor CH). The cluster head stations (CH, CHand CH) communicate among other cluster head stations (CH, CHand CH). A mobile communications station (e.g., CM) evaluates a beacon message received from a first member station (e.g., CM) of the plurality of mobile stations through a transceiver. The station CMalso determines whether to communicate with the first member station CMdirectly or to communicate with the first member station CMby forwarding messages through a cluster head station CHthat is affiliated to the mobile communications station CM
