Abstract

A storm protector () to be attachable over a window () or other opening of a building () includes a header (), a bottom sill () and side frames () extending between the ends of the header () and the sill (). The header () carries a tube () which has one end of a curtain assembly () attached thereto. The curtain assembly ()is biased by a spring () to be normally coiled on the tube (), but the curtain assembly () may be manually moved along the frames () to the sill () to cover the window opening (). A bar () is formed at the other end of the curtain assembly (), and the bar () carries a guide and lock assembly () which rides in and can engage at least one of the side frames () to guide and selectively hold the curtain assembly () at any selected position along the side frames (). A tensioning assembly () is positioned in the header () and, without disassembling the protector (), it may be accessed to adjust the tension of the spring (). The header () includes a sealing surface (), the sill () includes a sealing surface () and each side frame () includes a sealing surface (). A force upon the curtain assembly () causes it to engage the sealing surfaces () to provide a full perimeter seal around the window opening ().
