Abstract

A projection type image display apparatus which keeps the uniformity of brightness and the feeling of sharpness and yet achieves a high quality of image called a high dynamic range is provided. When the amount of projection light is made small, the projection of unnecessary leak light or scattered light from a light modulating element P from a projection optical system PLis suppressed and a firm black display is provided. The amount of projection light is controlled in conformity with the maximum luminance level of an input image signal. Also, the write signal of the light modulating element is modulated in conformity with the control of the amount of projection light, whereby it becomes possible to expand the display dynamic range while compensating for the display luminance level.
