Compounds of the formula 1OCN—R—NHCOX—R—(Y)  (1),where X is a covalent bond to Ror is O, S or NR, Y is a hydrogen atom or a free functional group and n is an integer from 1 to 20, can be used for functionalizing or modifying compounds or solid surfaces which have at least one group which is reactive toward isocyanate.
