Abstract

The image scannercomprises a manuscript conveying unithaving conveying rollsfor conveying a manuscriptand a first light source, and a manuscript reading unitmounted on the manuscript conveying unit. The manuscript reading unitdetects movement of the manuscriptin the sub-scanning directionby a rotation detecting rolldriven by the conveying roll. When the manuscriptis a reflection-type one, only a second light sourceis switched ON to read the manuscript. When the manuscriptis a transmission-type one, only the first light sourceis switched ON to read the manuscript. The image scannerdoes not have a fixed platen. One-dimensional CCDis fixed. The image scannercan therefore be small in size.
