Abstract
A medium-edge setting device detects edges of a paper (S) and acquires data for left and right edge candidate positions (S). The medium-edge setting device determines whether the difference between left and right center-edge distances is less than or equal to a predetermined value (S). If so (S: YES), the right edge position is set to the right edge candidate position and the left edge position is set to the left edge candidate position (S). If not (S: NO), the paper is conveyed a predetermined amount (S) and the paper edge detection is repeated. If the repetitions of the paper-edge detecting process exceed a predetermined number (S: NO), then the larger of the left and right center-edge distances is set as the distance from the center of the paper to each edge position, and the left and right edge positions are set according to this distance (S, S, S).
