Abstract
An apparatus and method for electrowinning metal from ionic solutions is provided wherein ionic solution is subject to nanofiltration. An electrowinning cell ( ) includes a reservoir ( ) adapted to receive an ionic solution ( ). During operation, metal ions in solution ( ) electroplate onto cathode ( ). Nanofilter ( ) is in fluid communication with the reservoir and receives solution ( ) from a location ( ) proximate to the cathode ( ). Retentate ( ) is formed as a first portion ( ) of the solution ( ) which passes through the membrane ( ) of the filter ( ). Permeate ( ) is formed as a second portion ( ) of the solution ( ) which passes through the membrane ( ) of the filter ( ) to a second region ( ) on the opposite side of membrane ( ) from the first region ( ). Permeate ( ) has a second concentration of metal ions lower than the first concentration in first portion ( ). Retentate ( ) is returned to the reservoir ( ) to intermix with solution ( ).
