Abstract

In a computer network ( ), a first object ( ) is moved from a current host address and port number ( ) to a new host address and port number ( ). A forwarder object ( ) associated with the first object ( ) is created at the current host and port number ( ). The forwarder object ( ) includes the new host address and port number ( ) for the first object ( ). A second object ( ) at a different host address and port number ( ) creates a message (MSG ) destined for the first object ( ). Not knowing that the first object ( ) has moved, the second object sends the message (MSG ) to the current host address and port number ( ). The forwarder object ( ) intercepts and forwards the message (MSG ) to the first object ( ) at the new host address and port number ( ). The first object ( ) returns a reply message (REPLY ) directly to the second object ( ). The reply message (REPLY ) includes the new host address and port number ( ) for the first object ( ). The second object ( ) updates its reference to the first object ( ) in response to the reply message (REPLY ). Subsequent messages from the second object ( ) to the first object ( ) can now be delivered directly without going through the forwarder object ( ).
