Abstract

The invention relates to a catalytic converter, especially for motor vehicles, and to a method for the production thereof. The inventive method is characterized in that a monolithic packet ( ) consisting of at least one monolith ( ) with wrap-around supporting matting ( ) is pressed into a tube section ( ) acting as a housing. The tube section ( ) has two longitudinal sections ( ) with different inner cross-sectional surfaces. The monolithic packet ( ) is pressed inwards from the end ( ) of the tube section with the bigger or biggest inner cross-sectional surface. The inventive catalytic converter is characterized in that it has at least one contracted longitudinal section ( ) with a reduced diameter ( ) or reduced inner cross-sectional surface, whereby the inner surface ( ) of the tube section ( ) runs parallel to the central longitudinal axis ( ) thereof.
