Abstract

Fuel vapor from a fuel tank ( ) of an engine ( ) is adsorbed by a canister ( ) via a first passage ( ). The canister ( ) comprises an air vent ( ) which communicates with the atmosphere. The canister ( ) communicates with an intake passage ( ) of the engine ( ) via a second passage ( ) provided with a purge valve ( ). When the air vent ( ) and purge valve ( ) are opened, the adsorbed fuel in the canister ( ) is purged to the intake passage ( ) due to the intake negative pressure of the engine ( ). If the negative pressure of the second passage ( ) becomes stronger than a reference negative pressure during purging, the purge valve ( ) is throttled to prevent an excessive negative pressure from acting on the fuel tank ( ).
