Abstract
A turbomachinery seal ( ) attached to annular member ( ) which surrounds and rotatably engages a shaft ( ). The seal is capable of sealing pressure differentials between a high pressure region ( ) and a low pressure region ( ) well in excess of 300 psi at relatively low leakage rates. One embodiment ( ) of the seal includes a plurality of confronting plates ( ) arranged so as to form an annular structure. Another embodiment ( ) includes a plurality of bristle packs ( ), each positioned between annular plates ( ) having an axial taper ( ) adjacent radially inner ends ( ). In another embodiment ( ) bristles and extend in axial positive and negative directions so as to create an interleaved bristle structure. In yet another embodiment ( ), a plurality of elongate members ( ) are embedded within bristles ( ). A turbomachine ( ) includes seals and of the invention.
