Abstract

A printer retracts the platen and transportation rollers when a cover is opened while avoiding interference with parts inside the printer without hindering smooth opening and closing of the cover, increasing printer size, or requiring a large space around the printer. The printer has a frame (cover and unit frame ) having a paper storage unit for storing a paper roll P , a cover for opening and closing an opening to the paper storage unit , a print head for printing on the roll paper from the paper roll P , a movable platen freely rotatably coupled to the cover for guiding the back of the roll paper at a proximal position opposite the print head , and an abutment for engaging a engagement lever and rotating the movable platen in a contrary direction in conjunction with opening and closing the cover . When the cover opens, the abutment rotates the free end side of the movable platen away from the proximal position opposite the print head , and when the cover closes the abutment rotates the free end of the movable platen toward the proximal opposite position.
