Abstract

An apparatus and method of copy protection for use in digital data recorders such as DVD-RAM recorders ( ), which includes using DVD disks ( ) with unique serial numbers stored in a read only part ( ) of the disk for recording data. The serial number of each disk together with other copy control information is digitally signed. The digital signature is verified at the DVD player/recorder ( ) to check whether the disk being played is an original disk or an authorized copy. If not, play back and recording of the data on the disk is prevented. The use of copy control information also allows the implementation of a copy generation management system.
