Abstract
The present invention provides a method of producing a porous carbon material in which a soft carbon-type carbon material is activated with alkali in the presence of a carboxylic acid ion and at least one metal ion selected from the group consisting of iron ions, cobalt ions, manganese ions and nickel ions. The method is capable of industrially producing a porous carbon material having a specific surface area per unit volume of 1000 (m /cm ) or more in high yield and at low cost. The packing density of the porous carbon material can also be increased, and a high capacitance per unit volume can be obtained when the porous carbon material is used as a polarizable electrode material. Therefore, the present invention also provides an electrical double layer capacitor having a small size and a large capacitance, and using the porous carbon material as a polarizable electrode.
