Abstract

The surface plasmon resonance apparatus ( ) for detecting a soluble and/or particulate analyte comprises a prism sensor ( ) providing a metallised sensor surface ( ) capable of binding the analyte, and a laser ( ) providing a beam ( ) for direction at the sensor surface ( ). A detector ( ) is provided which is capable of detecting light ( ), which is internally reflected from the sensor surface ( ). Displacement means ( ) comprising a vibrator ( ) and mirror ( ), is operable whereby the excitation beam ( ) is displaced over an angular range (A) relative to the sensor surface ( ). An analyte sample ( ) is disposed on the metallic sensor ( ). The detector ( ) is used to interpret the light signals ( ) internally reflected from the sensor surface ( ) so that the sample ( ) is analysed. A video camera system ( ), which includes a mirror ( ), microscope objective ( ) and CCD (charge-coupled device) array ( ), is used to detect the scattered light emitted from the upper face of the sensor surface ( ).
