Abstract

An apparatus ( ) for absorbing a shock comprises a first tubular member ( ) and a second tubular member ( ) that are slidable positioned relative to one another. A plurality of layers ( ) of energy absorbing members ( ) extend radially from the second tubular member ( ) such that movement of the second tubular member ( ) in a first direction relative to the first tubular member ( ) sequentially deforms the layers ( ) of energy absorbing members ( ). As the layers ( ) are sequentially deformed, a subsequent layer ( ) of energy absorbing members ( ) begins to deform before the previous layer ( ) of energy absorbing members ( ) is completely deformed. The deformation of the energy absorbing members ( ) absorbs the shock.
