Abstract
The invention relates to a software system and method for automatically determining capabilities of a hardware system to permit a software development system to support multiple hardware system architectures. In this method, the software system is executed on a host processor interconnected with the hardware system. A database is accessed to obtain a description of a set of functional components present within the hardware system. A software representation of the capabilities of each functional component is created by using the description of the set of functional components. Then, the software system accepts a request to perform a task that will use one or more of the functional components in the hardware system. The software representation is traversed to determine if the functional components are available to perform the requested task. If the components are available, the requested task is performed.
