Abstract
A light emitted from a light source ( ) or a return light from a magneto-optical discs ( or ) is transmitted by a polarization maintaining optical fibers ( or ). Phase difference generators ( and ) are disposed in optical paths, respectively, for these light beams to generate a phase difference which is used to cancel, or multiply by an integer multiple of &pgr;, a phase difference between field vibration components, raised in the light due to the birefringence of the polarization maintaining optical fiber ( or ) when the light is propagated through the latter.
