Abstract
A probe is disclosed which is suitable for use with an apparatus for monitoring the corrosion of a material by accurately measuring changes in the resistance of an exposed element ( ) in relation to a reference element ( ). The two elements are electrically connected in series via a bridge ( ). The elements are formed from the same piece of material divided along an elongate slot ( ) and are proximate to one another so that the temperature difference between them is kept to a minimum. This prevents false indications of corrosion by ensuring that the temperature coefficient of the resistivities is the same in both elements. The reference element ( ) is covered with a corrosion-resistant layer. ( ). This layer ( ) is preferably as thin as possible and also a good thermal conductor to further ensure equal temperature of the reference ( ) and exposed ( ) elements.
