Abstract

A propulsion system for a ship having one front and one rear propelling engine (M , M ), the propulsion powers of which can be coupled to an output shaft ( ) via a gear system ( ). The shafts of the gear mechanism are disposed on top of each other in an essentially vertical manner. The ship output shaft ( ) extends below the rear propelling engine (M ). It is proposed that an input gear ( ), disposed upon a rear input shaft ( ), is permanently meshed with an intermediate gear (Z ) disposed upon a first axis of rotation ( ), and that an output gear ( ) disposed upon a gear output shaft ( ) likewise meshes with an intermediate gear (Z ) disposed upon the first axis of rotation ( ) whereby a large vertical axial distance results between the rear input shaft ( ) and the gear output shaft ( ) despite the small gear diameter.
