Abstract

A central nervous system (CNS) catheter assembly ( ) adapted for use as a ventriculostomy catheter and a spinal catheter includes a catheter body ( ) defining at least one lumen ( ) therethrough having a drug delivery branch ( ) and a monitoring/sensing branch ( ). The drug delivery branch ( ) and the monitoring/sensing second branch ( ) are in fluid communication with the lumen ( ). The assembly further includes a filter assembly ( ) disposed in fluid communication with the drug delivery branch ( ) and a valve assembly ( ) disposed in fluid communication with the monitoring/sensing branch ( ). Also in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a temperature control system ( ) for use in controlling the temperature of a location within the central nervous system such as the brain or the spinal cord. The system further includes a pump controller ( ), a central processing unit or controller ( ), a temperature sensing element ( ), and a power supply ( ) all operatively connected to the temperature control mechanism.
