Abstract

When engine shutdown conditions are satisfied while an engine is running, a controller automatically shuts down the engine (idling stop state). When the engine is automatically shut down and engine restart conditions are satisfied, the engine is driven by a motor and the engine is restarted. At this time it is determined that the vehicle is in a deterioration state when the increase rate of the rotation speed of the engine after starting driving the engine with the motor is low. Thereafter idling stop is prohibited. Furthermore when it is determined that the vehicle is on an up-slope, determination of deterioration state is not performed. The engine is driven by the motor and the engine is immediately restarted.
