Abstract

A writing apparatus ( ) for forming images from digital data onto color motion picture film or other photosensitive medium ( ), the apparatus employing a single spatial light modulator ( ) and having an illumination system ( ) comprising a dichroic prism ( ) and a plurality of light sources ( ). The dichroic prism ( ) directs light from each light source ( ) onto a common output axis, thereby providing an incident light beam for modulation by the spatial light modulator ( ). The apparatus allows high-speed imaging optimized for photosensitive media ( ). Additional sensor ( ) and logic components allow writing apparatus ( ) to adapt to different types of photosensitive media ( ) without requiring any retooling or manual adjustment.
