Abstract

A detection system ( ) utilising projected light ( ) viewed through an appropriately placed camera ( ) detects variations in surface height ( ). The system ( ) is arranged to project light onto the surface ( ) of interest. A camera with optical axis ( ) oriented parallel to and offset from the direction of light projection is used to image the intersection ( ) of the projected light ( ) with the surface ( ). The system ( ) observes deflections ( ) of this imaged intersection ( ) and associates them with the movement of an object ( ) through the projected light. The object can range from a surface irregularity ( ) to a person ( ) walking along a corridor.
