Abstract
A communication system employing Reed-Solomon error-correction coding which comprises an encoder ( ) and a decoder ( ). Either the encoder or decoder may be compatible with a first field polynomial selected to reduce the number of logic gates in the encoder or decoder. Before decoding, a converter ( ) converts the code from a form compatible with a first field polynomial to another form compatible with a second field polynomial.
