Abstract

A system for changing a tool head ( ) carried by a robot ( ) includes a locking mechanism ( ) having a keyhole-shaped slot ( ) therein, and a lock key assembly ( ) having a key ( ). Depression of a button ( ) rotates a cam arm ( ) to extend the key ( ) outwardly where it can be received in the larger opening ( ) of the slot ( ). Depression of the button ( ) of the locking mechanism ( ) moves the slot ( ) such that the neck ( ) of the key ( ) is received in the smaller opening ( ) of the slot ( ). Release of the buttons ( ) then allows a spring ( ) to retract the key ( ) until its head ( ) is received in a recess ( ) of the locking mechanism ( ) to attach the tool head ( ) to the robot ( ). The parts are detached by again depressing the button ( ) which extends the key ( ) to remove its head ( ) from the recess ( ) and then depressing a button ( ) to move the slot ( ) so that the key ( ) is again in the larger opening ( ) from where it may be removed. The system may be operated manually or operated automatically at a docking station ( ).
