Abstract

A system and method for detecting wear and the beginning of the mechanism of belt failure. A sensor ( ) detects when a self tracking drive belt ( ) tracks off center due to the asymmetrical wear ( ) of the belt ( ). The sensor ( ) may be a simple mechanical or optical switch which is activated upon contact or a complex system which can detect the relative movement of the belt ( ) when the belt ( ) tracks to either side of the pulley ( ). An audible or electrical signal indicates that the belt ( ) needs to be changed.
