A field emission display ( ) includes a cathode plate ( ) having a plurality of electron emitters ( ), ballast resistors ( ), an anode plate ( ) having an anode ( ), and a scan mode control circuit ( ). The scan mode control circuit ( ) is coupled to a video control circuit ( ) via a scan mode switching circuit ( ). The scan mode control circuit ( ) cooperates with the scan mode switching circuit ( ) and the video control circuit ( ) to automatically switch between a single scan mode of operation and a multi-scan mode of operation.
