Abstract

In a vehicle control system that is able to accurately recognize an approaching user, excessive detection operations are suppressed to reduce battery consumption. Control is performed at an optimum timing as desired by a user. The vehicle has a controller for forming a large area, using low power electromagnetic radiation. Within the large area, a large area ID request signal can be received. When a portable transceiver enters the large area and returns a response ID in reply to the large area ID request signal back to the controller of the vehicle, the controller then forms a plurality of small areas in which a small area ID request signal for detailed detection can be received. When it is confirmed that the portable transceiver entered any of the small areas, the controller unlocks the vehicle door associated with that small area, allowing the user to enter the vehicle.
