A solid solution represented by the formula (1): Li M M is used as a negative electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprising a chargeable and dischargeable positive electrode, a non-aqueous electrolyte and a chargeable and dischargeable negative electrode. In the formula (1), M represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Fe, and M represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Si and Sn, and 0&lE;x<10, 0.1&lE;y&lE;10 and z&equals;1.
