Abstract
A method and system for identifying a server in a distributed data processing system is provided. A primary server name and a secondary server name for the server are registered. The server is able to respond to requests directed to either the primary server name or the secondary server name. A plurality of secondary server names may be registered. The primary server name and the secondary server name may be stored in a configuration file or an initialization file. The primary server name or the secondary server name may be registered with a call to a NetBIOS application programming interface.
