Abstract
An equaliser for performing equalisation in a radio receiver receiving a signal from a transmitter, there being a Channel between the transmitter and the receiver having a Channel Impulse Response, CIR. The equaliser comprises CIR estimation means for generating a plurality of tap coeffecients; assessment means for assessing the tap coeffecients generated by the CIR estimation means and for outputting an assessment signal; and an equaliser algorithm processing unit , adapted to receive the assessment signal, for selecting and performing one of a plurality of different equaliser algorithms on the basis of the assessment signal, whereby when one or more of the tap coeffecients may be disregarded, an algorithm which requires less processing power may be selected and performed in preference to an algorithm which considers all of the coeffecients generated by the CIR estimation means
