Abstract
An electromagnetic clutch ( ) for an air conditioning compressor includes a generally cylindrical pulley ( ) rotatably mounted on a comressor housing ( ) and having an annular friction surface ( ) in a cavity ( ). A driven member ( ) is mounted on a compressor shaft ( ) and has a leg ( ) with an annular friction surface ( ) positioned radially adjacent the cavity friction surface to form an annular space ( ) therebetween. A quantity of flowable magnetic material ( ) is provided in the annular space and a magnetic coil ( ) is fixed on the housing adjacent thereto. When electrical power is applied to the magnetic coil ( ), magnetic flux is generated in the annular space ( ) polarizing the magnetic material and frictionally coupling the friction surfaces to cause the pulley ( ) to rotate the driven member ( ). A divider ( ) can be positioned between the legs ( ) to provide additional annular spaces ( ) for the magnetic material ( ).
