Abstract

A suspension system ( ) controls the amount of compressible fluid ( ) within struts ( ) to determine spring rate coefficients (K ) and dampening coefficients (B ) for the struts ( ). The spring rate and dampening coefficients (K , B ) are selected to provide forces (F) which are a sum of several components, which include a desired target static force (F ) for balancing various forces acting upon a vehicle chassis, comparison of the target strut force (F ) to the actual force (F) applied by the respective struts ( ), comparison of velocity ({dot over (z)} ) of the chassis relative to a selected reference datum, and a ride height error (e ). Frequency dependant filtering decreases the spring rate coefficients (K ) when changes in position (Z ) are detected at frequencies (&ohgr;) beneath a threshold level (&ohgr; ), and decreases the dampening coefficients (B ) when changes in velocity ({dot over (z)} ) are detected at frequencies (&ohgr;) above a threshold level (&ohgr; ).
