Abstract

It is made possible to record, on a recording medium on which original image data before compression is recorded, data resulting from a first coding processing performed when coding the data by a variable rate compression and coding system and to code quickly in real time when performing a second coding processing from that recording medium. Video data is reproduced by a VTR from a master video tape on which source video data is recorded and the first coding processing is carried out at a compressing and coding apparatus The bit rate, allocation data, etc. obtained by this coding processing are stored in a predetermined region of the master video tape via the VTR When the master video tape is used, the second coding processing can be quickly carried out without reading the bit rate data etc. from another apparatus.
