To inspect a disc-shaped recording medium accurately, promptly and nondestructively, a laser light emitted from a laser generator is irradiated through an optical fiber a rotatable diffusion plate and an objective lens to the surface of a disc A solid-state image sensing device detects a return component of the light, reflected from the surface of the disc A processor processes the output image from the solid-state image sensing device to inspect the configuration of the signal recording surface of the disc
