Abstract

This relates to a process for producing an electric double layer capacitor having a low resistance and a large capacitance of at least 10F, and it is an object to provide a process for producing a large capacitance electric double layer capacitor showing little self-discharge, little deterioration with time of the capacitance or little deformation of the cell. The above object is accomplished by forming an element by disposing a positive electrode and a negative electrode made mainly of a carbon material having a specific surface area of at least 500 m /g to face each other with a separator interposed, impregnating it with a non-aqueous electrolyte, applying a voltage of from 1 to 1.5 times the rated voltage in a non-sealed state, further maintaining the element under reduced pressure and sealing a container accommodating the element.
